Champion 22-Ton Horizontal / Vertical Gas Log Splitter

My 18 year old son purchased one of these for me . I have never in my life been so disappointed with a piece of power equipment . Brought it home , spent 2 hours pulling the rope, full of fuel, full of engine oil and setting on a smooth level concrete slab. The perfect setting to split a cord of wood. In the month I have owned the machine, I have got it to start and run TWO times. 2 new pull ropes and a new spark plug, makes no difference. Since owning this splitter I have purchased 2 cords of firewood from local woodsmen to heat my home. Buyer beware, it may work great in the summer time when the stores have big sale events , but when it comes down to it, in the winter, think twice. Once the machine is running it works as described , but getting it to crank and run, is the problem.

Within one hours use of this splitter, the red wings designed to hold split pieces on the splitter were bent and mangled. They should be made from metal two to three times thicker. If that was not frustrating enough, within the same hour of use, two of the bolts used to anchor the hydraulic cylinder to the unit sheared their heads off and now we get to stop production and drill them out to fix a brand new splitter.

By the way, we were not even splitting really tough wood. Mostly a bunch of very dry pine and some box elder. I would imagine that something tough like hickory, oak, or maple would literally tear this splitter its flimsy construction apart in no time.
