  1 Question
Q: Hi Mike,
I am trying to decide what size log splitter to buy. I like a log splitter that has the catch arms. The other question I have is about the tonage, how do you decide what tonage you need if you do not know what size logs you are going to have? I split logs occasionally, not everyday. In the past I have used a 20 ton and I would like it to be high speed trailerable.

by John Symonds from Massachusetts on August 18, 2011

A: Our Champion 22 to splitter has catch arms. Will will not have a splitter that will be high speed capable. The limit is 45mph. A 20 ton splitter is great for logs 24" or less. Pretty much can do whatever you need.

20 Tons Of Sweetness!
I have 12 cords of nasty, twisted green ash to split and this machine makes it a pleasure. Some of this wood is so twisty that I simply can't split it, and I did 7cords by hand last fall of a different wood.

The Honda motor purrs nicely and I can do a full 2 cords per tank. My only beefs are: I can't get the wheel bearing covers on and I am not the only one with this problem. Hopefully LSD will send me a new set because I bent one of them before I gave up.

Shane,
We're sorry- we don't carry replacement parts, but you can give the folks at Great Northern a call, toll free, at 800-822-0295 for any parts and advice you may need.

They may ask for the serial number of your splitter, so be sure to have that handy when you call.

Please be aware that any modifications you make to the splitter may void your warranty.

Totally Happy!!
I've been looking for a log splitter for awhile now. When I saw ones that split in both directions I decided this was the type I had to have, most were in the $2000 range, so I was happy to find this one. The sales staff were very helpful, they kept me up to date on the status of my order by email and gave me a tracking # when it shipped. I used the pay by check option for the discount and it took about 3 weeks for it to arrive. The lift gate charge was well worth it, the driver lowered it... more

Worth Every Cent!
Fantastic log splitter A++, tough to keep up with a supply of logs to split. C+ for assembly required. Instructions were sound and easy to follow, but 'tools needed' was incomplete and should have included Teflon tape as well as few other items that you would not normally have at an austere location such as a cabin.

Single pull start as advertised, quiet operation as well, exactly what I would expect from a Honda engine. Don't sweat it if there is not service center in the general area, I... more

Very Good Value
I've put about 10 cord through my splitter so far and I'm very happy with it. The Honda motor is smooth and fuel efficient. The splitter has plenty of power and I love the two way action. I can't imagine why they still build splitters any other way.
The build quality is good and it was easy to assemble. The only disappointment was a couple of cheap plastic fittings on the return line and the lack of a filter.

I've also noticed there must be some flex in the steel where the pins hold... more

Great Experience
The price was competitive. The shipping was fast and easy (I opted for the lift gate delivery, great idea cause its heavy!). The assembly instructions were very helpful, and all the parts were there and packaged nicely. Anyone with basic mechanical knowledge and experience can accomplish assembly without a problem, but it takes two people on some of the lifting for assembly. Once it was together, three or four pulls and it was running!

I was skeptical at first about how strong the two way... more

Gne 2 Way Log Splitter
We just started splitting with this splitter, so I can't speak to its reliability or durability yet. I will say that the assembly was straight forward, the directions were very clear and it is much faster than the old splitter we used that only split in one direction. GNE was friendly & helpful when I called with a question. So far, I am very happy with this purchase.

Great Wood Splitter
Received in timely manner. Not easy to get off trailer but after taking crate apart was able to get off in pieces. Assembly not really one man job but with help of floor jack and piece of 6x6 did manage by myself. Be very careful and make sure of balance points. Added oil to engine, fluid to reservoir, double checked levels add Honda started on 3rd pull. Greased wedge arm with good coat of axle grease, activated cylinder back and forth 6 times, cut off engine. Checked fluid level, topped off... more

Made A Simple Protective Table To Protect Engine And Fittings.
This is my second review of the GNE two way splitter. I took the splitter to a buddy's place in the woods of Northeast Michigan to help him stock up on wood last weekend. We had about ten guys to all pitch in a hand with the work. The splitter was fast enough to keep three people consistently busy feeding it wood and loading the split logs into a couple of pickups all day. Seven hours of work used only two tanks of gas, and we split, hauled, and stacked over 20 face cords of firewood in that... more

Great Splitter
Had this splitter delivered in no time - but man is it heavy. No way you can put together with one person, even two a challenge as you need to prop up back end when bolting together so third person helpful. After the main pieces are bolted together the rest is a snap. Wheel covers a bugger to get on, should have put in freezer, bent one trying to hammer on.

Great splitter - well constructed, except for a couple vinyl fittings I will replace with brass. Other than that, well worth the... more

Sweet Little Splitter!!!
I ordered my GNE 11571 on a Wednesday evening and it was delivered the following Monday afternoon. The freight company was very good about calling ahead to make sure our schedules matched up for delivery. The splitter arrived in good condition and seemed to be pretty well protected by the large foam insulated box it was packaged in. I unloaded the box and pallet with the forks on my farm tractor, but you better have help if doing it by hand, as the box is heavy and awkward to unload this way.... more

Set For The Winter After Three Days.
I checked heavy as a con but I'm glad it is heavy. It is a well built machine. I will reserve the durable description for later on down the road. My wife enjoys splitting and with two people and the "split in both directions" feature you can really go through the rounds quickly. We split Ponderosa, Juniper and Oak up to 30 inches in diameter and I feel we haven't tested the GNE yet. The Honda engine starts easily and runs all day. Couldn't be happier so far.

Easy To Use And Operate
We recently purchased the GNE 11571 log splitter. The additional $50 delivery charge was paid to enable the 375 lbs. package (cardboard box) to be off-loaded from the semi-trailer to our gator, because our local road and gravel lane could not accommodate the large vehicle. From there, the package was transported to our garage. The instructions were read to determine the tools (ratchet set, Teflon tape for some of the hoses, etc.) and liquids needed (3 gallons of hydraulic fluid, 0.5 liters of... more

Very Easy To Use!
I have only used the splitter twice since receiving it, but can say that it is very easy to assemble and very easy to use.
I have split about 2 cords so far with flawless results. It is compact enough to roll right in the garage next to the other tools. I love it so far. Honda motors are a must. Another great feature are the holding racks. They save your back by not having to catch each piece before falling. I thought the cost was a little high at first, but have since changed my mind. Wow
I spent 3 weeks looking online and reading reviews until I finally made my mind up to purchase the GNE 20 ton log splitter. There were 2 main reasons and they were 1, it had a Honda engine which I was looking for in the splitter, and the size is just perfect. It's not real long and bulky. I used it for the first time last weekend and after splitting about a cord of logs in about an hour I ran out of wood to split and was looking for more. I had a great time using it. The height of the machine... more

Great Splitter!
I've always resisted the urge to buy a splitter before, until arthritis raised it's ugly head. I've dabbled with other splitters before and found them all wanting- too d**n slow.

The guy who designed this 2 way splitter is a genius. The machine is fast, powerful and super efficient. I have my wife run the lever and when we get the rhythm down, there's a constant flow of split Douglas Fir.

It's actually a pretty good workout keeping up. In way less than an hour, more like 45... more

3 Years Old
Bought this unit 3 seasons ago, split about 3 cords per season and have not had one issue with it yet. The Honda motor starts great, plenty of power and can split anything. Would recommend it to anyone, and would add its got enough power for any job. I split mainly Oak, Elm, Walnut and even with that stringy Elm, it just plain goes through it with pleasure. Get one, you won't ever regret it.

Nice Machine!
Easy assembly, well built, excellent machine. Nice working height, easy on the back. Split logs and toss them right in the front end loader of my tractor all in one easy process. They never even hit the ground. Two hours of splitting and I had half of my winter's wood supply ready to burn. Powerful - barely slows down even in large diameter gnarly logs. So easy to produce consistent sized split wood regardless of original log size. You will love this machine! Nothing on the market... more

Arrived intact on pallet. Had wife use tractor to pick it off the truck and bring to the shop since I was at work. Used a chain hoist to unpack and assemble by myself in about and hour and a half. Good directions and unit appears to be very stout. Goods welds and quality materials. The plastic fittings are a bit of a disappointment but under normal use I think they will be fine. Great Splitter, Only 2 Small Issues.
I purchased this splitter not knowing too much about splitting. I love the machine.
The only problem I have is because it only splits horizontal some of the pieces I physically can't lift onto the splitter. So I have to wait until I can have someone else come over and help me lift those pieces. Would be nice if it split vertically for those heavy pieces.

A Log Splitter For My Hubby For Christmas!
I have been listening to my husband complain for several years now about wanting a log splitter, so this year I surprised him early and got him one.

Except for putting it all together, he likes it very much. He likes how it splits going back and forth. He likes the Honda motor. And he says, "It is a splitting sucker!" Ha!

He says the only thing that would have made it a better product, would have been to let it split horizontally too for the huge pieces of wood that are... more

I recently purchased the GNE model 11571 through log splitters Direct and I must say that I am very pleased with the whole process.

The thing I like most about the model 11571 is that it splits both ways which increases your efficiency 100 %. Having the honda engine to me is also a great plus.

I have used other splitters that split only one way and they seem obsolete to me now.

I am extremely impressed with this machine and it is the best tool I have ever owned. The Honda engine is amazing with easy starting, power, and most importantly fuel economy. I can run it all day and split tons of wood with no concerns at all. The dual action splitting is very useful and has tremendous power. I've not seen a piece of wood it won't split. I bought my machine based on the overwhelming amount of positive reviews from other customers and I was not disappointed.

I have had 3 splitting sessions and am very impressed with the splitter. It starts easily, and handles everything I have given it, even some gum tree that my brother in law dropped off!

An extra note: I read that others said they were not given a choice with the $50 lift service. I don't know why that happened with their situations but I was not required to pay for... more

Very Mobile
I like it a lot. We used an old home made splitter before that was big and hard to move. This thing is very mobile, you can move it yourself and it takes up less room in the barn.

It runs smooth and I split some big stuff with it. My only issue is that split wood can fall off of the table and hit the engine and oil tank, which I have broken. I think a guard or extension on the table would be a good idea. I think I will make a guard for mine.

Assembly was also easy, it only took a couple... more

2 Way Log Splitter
It was easy to assemble and it works great. It's the best log splitter I have ever used and I have been burning wood since before it became popular.

My only dissapointment was with the Honda motor. It is undersized for the work expected of it. I will enjoy using it even though I expect to have to replace the motor in 3 or 4 years.

I enjoy showing my wood burning friends how well and fast it works.

Awesome Splitter
I can't imagine a better splitter for the household. It has serious power.

The Honda motor started on the second pull. You need two strong, or three average people for about 5 minutes to put it together. One could do it with a chain fall or come along, if you have a lift point.

It's a great product for the money! I'm sure it will perform well through many seasons.

Was looking for a splitter and came across this type that split both ways. Great idea the worst thing about conventional splitters was the waiting. The first I saw of this type was made in China, so when I saw this one with American made parts I went for it. Shipping was prompt and the lift gate was well worth the extra money. Had it unloaded to my snowmobile trailer and put it together off that. Was able to put it together myself but its quite heavy and an inexperienced person really should... more

Huge Upgrade From The Old Homemade Splitter
I purchased the splitter on Sunday and it was delivered on Friday. My son and I put the machine together in about 3 hours. The main wedge beam is quite heavy and a bit of a pain to maneuver into place. Once the wedge is bolted to engine and tank, the rest of the assembly goes smooth. The low pressure hydraulic plastic elbows are a disappointment for a rugged built splitter. I replaced the cheap quality plastic elbows with brass elbows during assembly to prevent headaches down the road. Once the... more

Could Not Be Happier!
I Am Very Happy With This Purchase, Well Built and Powerful. as Someone Else Stated in Their Review, the Wheel Bearing Caps Fit Very Tight. I Put Them in the Freezer Overnight and They Went in Much Easier. I Have Not Done My Yearly Splitting Yet...But the Few Logs I Have Split For a Trial Run Were Not Even a Challenge For This Splitter. I Can'T Imagine There Is a Better Splitter On the Market, Especially At This Price, Buy It With Confidence.

Worth The Money!
This is the first splitter I've owned and it does the job. Everything from 12"-24" it's handled, Red and White Oak, Hickory you name it and I've split it. I love the 2-way action with no cylinder cycle time, one piece after another non-stop. You will definitely need help assembling this splitter because this boy is heavy. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a splitter.

I split 14 cords of 16' wood, and I'm amazed how much faster than a conventional splitter this is. Given time, the 2-way machine will make conventional designs obsolete.

A D**n Good Purchase
Of course it arrived unassembled. Not much of a problem for me, since I'm pretty good with tools- BUT... the weight of the beam assembly was a little cumbersome to line up and bolt in place. I managed to jockey it around using a hydraulic lift and some 4x4's.

After assembling, I filled the gas tank, greased the beam, put in the engine oil, and filled the hydraulic reservoir with about 4 gallons of fluid. I pulled the start cord twice and it started.

So far I have enjoyed splitting... more

This is the best logsplitter we could have hoped to purchase! I read all the reviews from consumers and agree wholeheartedly.

We visited the local "box stores", specialty stores, and even the local fairs looking for the best deal... Options were limited everywhere except this website! I was able to shop on this site and see exactly what was out there.

The multiple "best seller" and other fields allowing you to narrow the search were incredibly helpful. Even though... more

I purchased this splitter 4 months ago. Assembly was fairly simple, the Honda Engine starts easily.

My property is covered with Locust Trees but this has not been a problem at all, having split 4 cords of Locust & Hickory. The 2-way splitting feature is a great advantage and made fast work of my log piles.

I would recommend this machine to anyone looking to split logs with a quality tool, quickly & safely. I am very happy with all of the quality features on this machine as well... more

Time Is Money
After assembling and using my log splitter I have determined that its about the only log splitter worth having. I can split logs twice as fast as any other splitter in the area.

The double action of the splitter saves considerable time. The rails on each side add to the convenience by saving time in bending over to continually retrieve partially split logs. The rails also aid in safety as they tend to keep you a safe distance from the splitter during operation.

Assembly was good... more

Very Happy
I just finished another 8 hours of splitting firewood for the coming winter - and I have to say this splitter makes it an easy task. Even though I'm splitting 6-8 cords of mixed fir, alder, and maple.

The only "con" I have about this splitter is that it should have a lip on the "off side" of the log rack to keep halves of larger rounds from rolling off onto the ground. There should also some sort of protection over the motor on the "off side" of the splitter... more

Surprised
I have to be honest. I have reasonable experience when it comes to cutting fire wood and splitting by hand. I'm a true amateur when it comes to log splitters. I have used friend's and relative's units on a limited basis.

I decided to get one because I want to have a back in 20 years. I bought the GNE splitter because of the positive reviews. It was relatively easy to assemble other than the heavy beam (used my van's tire changing jack). Further, make sure you put enough hydraulic oil... more

Why Didn't I Buy This Before?
This unit arrived today, in perfect condition. Yup, it's heavy. Assembly took 2.5 hours with great directions. I wouldn't want to tackle it without a chain hoist or a couple of helpers.

Once assembled, we filled the hydraulic reservoir with Dextron III as per the manual (warm weather recommendation), put gas and oil in the engine, which started on the first pull, every time. Split red oak, produced 1/2 cord in 30 min.

The machine is built strongly, works flawlessly, and amazed us... more

Couldn't Be More Impressed
We've done a couple of cords of wood and used this to split up wood from about a dozen trees. It has worked flawlessly.

I love that it splits in both directions. We typically have my son pushing the lever back and forth and at least 2 guys putting wood in trying to keep up with the splitter, and a couple more stacking.

We've worked it hard and it may slow down on some big diameter pieces, but it still gets through.

I've used a handful of other splitters from different... more

I am splitting California pine, fir, poplar, cedar, and ocassionally some elm and oak in Reno, Nevada.

Went Great
Assembly was easy - qty 2 of 5/16"X2" long bolts were missing, couldn't get dust caps on - reordered them because they couldn't be used. You need a better method or less interference to install them. I read reviews of how it was hard to get them on, and I still screwed them up. First 6 tanks of gas went flawlessly without one round not splitting. Hoping and expecting more great success in the future !

So Far So Good
The assembly instructions were a little weak and could really use another proof read. There were a few parts missing but they did send them at no cost. A minor bother but it was a bit annoying to have to delay the first use I was excited to get to. That said it appears to be a good splitter. I love the Honda engine - easy start, quiet, yet powerful. The block on either end could be a little bigger to protect the operator handle and the quad (if I keep it hitched while splitting). I would... more

Great Northern Equipment 20-ton 2-way Honda-powered Horizontal Gas Log Splitter Review
We arranged dock pick-up this morning with R&L, good choice.
They loaded directly into the back of our pick-up.
My current wife and I - (two 66 year old) - were able to assemble the two heavy pieces on the tailgate and slide the assembly down a couple of loading ramps.
It's a heavy piece, but it's that what you want?
Be sure to lubricate the wedge slide very well and get the air out of the hydraulic lines.
I agree with Bob's comments from August 15, 2012 about having some off-side... more

Love The Machine
The splitter arrived on time and in good condition. The truck driver unloaded and used an electric pallet cart to move up my driveway and into my garage.

I was able to assemble the splitter by myself, positioning splitter assembly on my motorcycle lift and matching the hydraulic / engine assembly together. Assembly instructions were excellent.

I have split 3 cords and love the machine. I lost 5 trees during Hurricane Sandy and the splitter is making short work on dealing with the logs. more

In the first week I split 3 full cords of red oakm which I thought would be a good test right out the gate. No problems- worked great.

I love the fact it splits back and forth, with no wasted time. The only issue I had was putting it together. It wasn't hard but it did take some time and a extra person to help.

GREAT. I love the GNE splitter. Got it put together by myself in three hours.

The Honda motor started on first pull after adding fluids, and got right on splitting the pile of wood I had been putting off doing with my axe.

Great Splitter
I luv this splitter. I'm new at this splitting stuff but I did 2 cords in 4 hrs.

It took me 2 1/2 hrs to assemble with the use of an engine crane. I used synthetic oil in the engine and ethanol-type stabilizer in the fuel.

I split some pretty big green oak- up to 24 inches long, and it always pulls it off.

I keep her clean and apologize to her for pushing her to the limit... lol!

On a scale of 10, this unit is an 11 for taking oversize green oak and not quitting.

Great Splitter In A Compact Unit
This splitter is well designed and really speeds up the splitting process. Two way splitting is the only way to go and plenty of power for the toughest logs. Honda power unit starts up on the first pull almost every time. This splitter requires two people to operate since it is so efficient one to operate and one to keep the logs coming.

I ran out of logs to split in a hurry and I am ahead of schedule in putting up all I need for next winter!

Assembly was reasonable and took about 4 hrs... more

I have now split about 3 cords of knotty pine, oak and madrone. Though the madrone is very hard wood it splits pretty clean whereas the pine is tougher. The splitter has been unstoppable.

The greatest design is the 2 way splitting... awesome. With my wife on the controls and me loading, we can get a lot of wood split quickly.

The drawbacks are two: 1) the directions are written by people that use to ride the yellow bus. Some things are in poor sequence. Diagrams are awful and not... more
