This unit made the list because of the powerful 208cc MTD engine, which easily handles homeowner splitting chores and then some.

The other feature that put this unit in our Good slot is its ability to split wood in either the usual horizontal mode, or flip the beam upright to split vertically.

The vertical position lets you roll big logs onto the splitter, instead of blowing out your back trying to lift them onto the beam. Just split chunks off the sides of the log until you have wood you can easily manage.

I received the MTD Gold 27 ton splitter and put it together according to the instructions, which were good and the assembly was easy and straight forward.

The fluids that were pre-installed at the factory were accurate as to fill level, etc. The engine started on the first pull and ran steady once warmed up.

The hydraulic hoses are of a good quality and two of them have a protective coil wrap on them. The splitter is built very well.

Once I use it I will be better able judge but so far I'm impressed.
