Mike's Recommendation
Pow'R'kraft has the top slot since their product and service have both proving themselves to us over time.
2 speeds give you the choice of using the faster 4-ton setting for smaller wood; or choose the 7-ton setting for larger logs requiring more force.
The nice part is you can split at the more powerful 7-ton setting, then easily switch to the faster 4-ton setting to return the ram quickly. It's the best of both worlds- powerful and efficient.
The unit is well balanced on large wheels, with the main weight towards the axle so it's easy to move around. It is designed for home use and 3-prong outlets; just don't try and run it at temperatures below 41 degrees.

Very pleased
I burn 5-6 cords every winter. This years delivery was big pieces which fit in my stove but I could not "stuff" it full because no smaller pieces to fill the voids.
I bought this splitter to re-split some of the logs to get smaller pieces to fill around larger ones.
Stove is in my basement so I was looking for a good electric unit.
It is pretty quiet, well built (heavy) and powerfull enough to handle anything I put in it. The 2 speeds helps speed things up. The 2 handed operation is safe but a pain in the butt.
I wish it could handle 22" logs but I'm still very happy. I put it on a heavy duty table to get it off the floor to save my back. I also split kindling with it.
Unit arrived in 4 days packed on a pallet.

I recently purchased the Pow'R'kraft 4/7 ton electric log splitter because I did not want another gas engine to maintain.
I was aprehensive about the ability to split large diameter logs with only 7 tons on tap. Well....I dont' know why, but this thing actually works! It is rated for 12" diameter, 20 inch long logs, but is capable of much more.
I have been splitting GREEN maple and beech , some up to 30" in dia. For the largest pieces, I use a makeshift ramp to roll the pieces onto the splitter which I leave on the ground. For normal size diameters, I work off my utility trailer which brings the machine up to a much more comfortable working level.
During the current cold weather, I load the splitter and a load of logs onto the trailer, back it into my heated garage and split away - very convenient (and quiet). This unit is extremely well built and takes a lot of abuse.
For work on the back of the lot, I simply hook up my generator (one of too many engines) and split at the woodpile. On the largest pieces, I sneak up on the split by working near the edge of the log first, holding it off center with a piece of scrap wood. This might be cheating a bit, but the fact is, it has never failed to split a log.
It is a bit heavy and cumbersome to move on the supplied wheels, but I move it around on my hand truck or trailer for longer distances. Very happy (and surprised) so far.

How I am learning to love my new log splitter
I've only had it for a couple weeks but already have split over 2 cords of freshly felled white oak. This tree was over 3' in diameter at the base and approx. 50 feet tall.
So far I have been able to split pieces that are approx. 15" in length and 10-12 inches in diameter using the 7 ton setting. Those that are larger in diameter I split in half using wedges and a sledge hammer before splitting on the splitter.
I have mounted the splitter on a couple of cement blocks to raise it approx. 12" for ease of operation. It's simple to use and fun to operate. Sure beats the gas-powered splitter I had previously. Using electricity instead allows me to run it inside my barn in all kinds of weather (out of the rain, snow and wind).
So far I give it five stars!!

log splitter
I received the splitter Wednesday and tried it out on 12inch dia. oak, cherry and maple. It split them all with no problem. EVen the pieces with large knots split easily.
The size of the machine is perfect as it fits nicely in my garage so I can use it no matter the weather and being electric, I don't have to keep another gas can stored.
My neighbor saw it and he couldn't believe the size wood I was splitting on such a small machine. I'd recommend this product to anyone who needs a log splitter for home use.

my history of wood burning
the additional room added to our house in 1980 included an air tight cast iron free standing stove. a chain saw was my only power tool i had for this work. later on a circular saw was used for cutting pallets.
using caution and understanding i still felt uneasy using them. the log splitter is excellent and without hi speed sharp teeth. its easy to use. i found two problems with it. putting it on a table requires lifting it and all logs split, also the non-locking power
button forces the users face to be only arms length from disaster.
thanks larry ( safety first ) f.
LSD RESPONDS: Two-handed operation is a safety feature- it prevents getting a hand trapped between the ram and the wedge!
The proper place to stand is towards the rear of the machine, and off to the side, away from the splitting wedge. This position also keeps your face and body away from the beginning of the split, where any splinters are likely to occur.

Back yard splitting
I purchased this splitter for several reasons. One, I was tired of paying for split wood, an item I had available to me but was paying for every year.
Two, the quiet of an electric splitter got rave reviews from my neighbors, and three, the power of this model was more than adequate for logs 20"and below.
So in one day of splitting, I am set for next year's burning season. I would recommend this splitter for the back yard wood splitter.

Extremely impressed
My wife and I bought a house last year on a couple of acres full of Ponderosa pine. The previous owner had cut down about 20 trees and left the logs stacked in the trees.
The house came with a wood burning stove, so I went out and bought a maul and wedge and tried splitting some of the wood by hand - not a good idea.
I did some research, read several reviews and ended up buying the Pow'R'Kraft. It came in a little over a week and right out of the box I split about a cord of wood the first day. I have at least 3 more to go.
I've never split wood before with an electric splitter. I am extremely impressed. It's fast, powerful, and very well built. I haven't had any problems so far and would recommend this tool to anyone.

The machine I got is great. I was shocked when I opened it (small), but ever so powerful.
It goes thru my oak logs with ease.

Best Value
I am quite happy. The log splitter was ordered on a Monday morning and I received it on Thursday.
It is quite powerful and so far and split everything even pieces of wood far bigger than recommended. I have had several other splitters and this one seems to have the best value.
I have only split about 3 cords of wood with it so I am not sure about long term use.

Pleasantly surprised at how powerful it is
We received the logsplitter in good condition, the trucker delivering the logsplitter was very polite and helpful.
When we tried out the machine for the first time we were pleasantly surprised at how powerful it was. The wife said she can't wait to use it on her own when I am away at work.
We buy firewood a log-truck load at a time so we go through a fair amount of wood and have been looking forward to not swinging the axe for some time. Thanks for an excellent product.

Not skeptical anymore
Saw the video of this splitter being used and remembered thinking how that guy must have picked the straightest smoothest log in the world to split.
I took the leap of faith and ordered it, mostly because the two year warranty. When I finally used it, I was convinced.
I've split logs from 6 inches to 30 inches across, if it binds up, I rotate the log 1/4 turn and try again. I've YET to find a log I couldn't split. If I can lift it onto the splitter, it'll work.
I've split oak, hickory, walnut. The oak was a little difficult because of all the stringy grains inside, wished the splitter closed a little more at full extension.
Absolutely love this thing. And it's so quiet you can actually carry on a conversation while working. The price was good, and after I realized how hard this machine worked it's worth every cent.

Splitter Review
AFTER reading the manual, I purchased the oil. Next I decided to see if it worked, and to my surprise it did. I did not see where it mentions that the oil is already in it.
I opened the vent valve, put in the appropriate wood, and it worked. I did notice that it leaks oil every time it is used, but attributed that to the fact it is a vent. Sad to say, I noticed an oil spill after I finished and closed the vent.
While it did work as advertised, I notice a design flaw that could cause injury. It is designed to be operated with two hands. IF this thing is used on the ground as opposed to a raised plate form, the operator's face is NEXT to the wood being cut. You have to bend over toward the splitter to operate it. I cut about one half cord of wood, or 100 pieces of wood (My pile measures 7 feet wide by one and a half feet deep by 3 feet high).
Several times I noticed the wood about to slip away from the ram, and stopped the operation. BUT, about every 10 or 12th time the wood would jump (Unexpectedly) from the bed of the splitter with enough force that had my head been there, it would have caused major injury.
I will, in the future, try this on a raised plate form, where I do not have to bend over. A remote switch would be a good thing. It would remove my head from the area of the ram. Also, the bleed valve needs to be placed on the top somewhere (Perhaps at the ram end), which would make it easier to open and close, and work without leaking oil.
Considering the cost of bigger machines, it does what it promises. Cut small pieces without gas.
LSD RESPONDS: Page 2 of the Owner's Manual says "Do not put the log splitter on the ground for operations. This is (an) awkward operating position that the operator has to bring his face close to the machine and thus risks being struck by wood chips or debris."
Page 6 says "Lift the log splitter by the handles at both ends and place it on a 2' to 2.5' high, stable, flat, and level work surface.
The folks at Pow'R'kraft tell us the unit is shipped with hydraulic fluid. Please check the dipstick on your unit per the instructions on page 10 of the Owner's Manual- the frequent leaks could be due to an overfilled hydraulic reservoir. You will also want to check to make sure that the dipstick/drain bolt is tight, too.
If the leaks persist even though the hydraulic oil is at the proper level, please contact Pow'R'kraft directly (toll free) 877-876-7895.

Very Pleased
I had a pile of wood ready to split when the truck arrived. I met the driver at the street with my 4 wheeler, signed the papers and was on my way in less than 5 minutes.
I worked through the pile in a couple hours -- including stacking the split wood.
I had a piece of red oak that was about 22" diameter that I could barely dent with the maul. I saved it for last. With a little care it handled the oak just fine.

Good splitter
This spliiter was bought by my Dad for me as gift. I've used it for about four cords of wood now.
It works very well for about 90% of the wood I need to split. Mostly cedar and pinon pine. Only the biggest, knottiest pieces won't split.
I would recommend this to others. The only downside I can come up with is the wheels are narrow and kinda cheap.
I cracked one with a log I tossed near the splitter, and can't find a replacement locally that fits.
LSD RESPONDS: You can contact the folks at Pow'R'Kraft (toll free) at 877-876-7895, extension 303; they should be able to send you the wheel.
The parent company of Pow'R'Kraft is Betst, so don't be surprised if that's how they answer the phone. They are in Oregon, so please take into account any time difference.

Love the splitter
I love the splitter. It split year-old, still green pinon logs very well- some up to 16 inches in diameter.
The largest ones required flipping the piece repeatedly, but eventually it split 99% of what I needed to do.
My one complaint is that the wheels are cheap and the stance of the wheels could be wider for more stable transport around the yard.

Unfortunate event!
I wish I could report good news but my splitter has completely stopped working after only 4 uses and a total of about 10 logs.
I was really impressed while it worked but suddenly last night, while trying to split a lot, the motor stalled and now will not work at all. I followed the instructions strictly but I did wonder about this machine in that the power levels never seemed to work like the book says.
I even spoke to a gentleman at Betst (the manufacturer) and he told me the description was written in reverse! ie. to cut the bigger logs you have to bring the control lever back toward the off position. It is when I did just that, my machine stalled and fails to work now.
I have contacted Betst in Oregon and I am awaiting their call. I am really bumming out.
LSD RESPONDS: We understand your disappointment; but the folks at Betst will be happy to help you.
One thing about electric log splitters- they stop working if left out in freezing temperatures. Please make sure you are working in a garage or barn that stays warmer than 40 degrees or so.

Should pay for itself
I just got my Pow-r-craft splitter today. It took about 1.5 weeks to get to my house once I ordered it. It came by semi truck on a pallet.
I opened it up and read the instructions and I was splitting wood in a few minutes. It definitely worked well on the stumps I had laying around waiting to be split.
My wife and I knocked out about 20 stumps in about an hour. It worked great, except a couple of stumps won over the machine's power due to the number of knots in them. I just tossed those in the trash. The other stumps were split with ease.
There really is no need for the 4 ton feature...it doesn't give it enough strength to split most of the logs I had. The 7 ton worked very well.
Definitely a good purchase for the money. I figure I just saved 75 bucks renting a splitter today.
The machine should be paying for itself by the end of next season.

This handy splitter runs on regular household current and splits smaller, seasoned wood with ease- and lets you enjoy a warm fire in the fireplace with no stress or strain.
A built-in handle and oversize wheels make it easy to move around the garage or heated barn. It won't work well if it's left out in freezing temperatures, but then again, neither do most of us.
It's especially handy if your fire wood needs to be pared down to fit in a fireplace, chimnea, or fire pit.

I would recommend this to anyone
I received my Pow R Kraft 7 ton log splitter in good order.
I only had to uncrate it, read the instructions, and plug it in. It works great and split everything I had: oak, juniper, and some pine.
A couple of the juniper logs were 16-17" diameter. In the 7- ton position it split without hesitation.
I would recommend the Pow R Kraft log splitter to anyone.
