| Good machine |
| By Harry (Berkeley Heights, NJ) |
On the negative side, the first day out, one of the hydraulic hose fittings failed, making an oily mess out of 2 guys.
We reattached it with double hose clamps, refilled it, and all's well. The bolts holding the "wings" for horizontal use sheared. Removed the wings, because I only use it vertically, anyway. PITA removing the sheared bolts though. Stored the wings in the garage for the day I might sell it.
On the positive side, the Honda starts on the first or second pull all the time. The thing will split ANYTHING, including oak rounds 3 feet in diameter. Green maple 2' across is child's play.
Considering the price of wood in New Jersey, this splitter paid for itself in a year. I'm 71 and fat and out of shape and handle this machine and the logs alone. Slowly, maybe, but alone. |

| First time splitter |
| By Bill Duncan (Belvidere, IL) |
Never had one of these toys before , so I spent time on line checking out a lot of the less expensive - lower tonnage models out there.
This is a great machine - split an entire tree (yes, cut into logs) of very green honeysuckle. I did have a little trouble with a 20 inch diameter piece of elbow section, which in all fairness is a very dense piece of wood.
I think lower tonnage machines would have had a lot more trouble than just one piece.
The vertical operation was very much my favorite - these logs were still very heavy!
I would like to see the manufacturer put some reflective tape on back end for added safety in towing. |

| How to Pick the Perfect Gas Log Splitter |
| By Jon Hoch, Founder (Bolingbrook, IL) |
Electric-powered log splitters are nice, but they lack the strength and speed to cut large quantities of wood quickly.
If you split wood often, you should seriously consider a gas-powered log splitter instead.
Selection is one is simple if you follow these two steps:
STEP 1: SELECT THE FORCE
The strength of a log splitter is measured in tons. The larger and harder the logs; the more force you'll need.
Gas-powered log splitter range between 12- and 34-tons.
Naturally, the stronger the splitter, the more expensive the machine.
STEP 2: SELECT THE ENGINE
Sure, log splitters have tires and frames. But, the most critical (and expensive) component is the engine.
Not all engines are equal.
For example, a Honda GC engine is a consumer-grade engine designed to be affordable.
The Honda GX engine, however, is a professional-grade engine designed for years of splitting performance.
Usually, the engine quality is a great indicator of the quality of the log splitter. |

| Basic Introduction to Log Splitters |
| By Jon Hoch, Founder (Bolingbrook, IL) |
Humans have been splitting wood since the invention of fire.
You can still split firewood like a caveman. Or, you save your back by using your brain.
Tim Cater, host of "Ask the Builder" fame, does a great job explaining the difference between mauls and manual logsplitters.
Before you watch the video, grab some popcorn and snuggle up next to the fireplace.
The next time you start it ... use your axe handle for kindling. :) |

| Broken bolt doesn't qualify for warranty |
| By Barry (Indianapolis, IN) |
My friend owns the 27 ton model. We have noticed the hydraulic hose attaches immediately underneath the right sided arm which supports logs that are placed on the splitter.
MTD uses poor quality steel bolts. It only took one bolt to fail and the bracket got into the hydraulic hose severing it.
MTD alleges the splitter was "abused" and won't warranty the 200.00 repair.
Buyer beware. There is no weight prohibition in the manual but MTD certainly was quick to run for cover in order to weasel out of what clearly is a bad design. The hose should not come in under a bracket! This is simply a design flaw. |
