What happens if you use it below 41 degrees? I live in Fairbanks Alaska, and splitting in the cold is the norm--plus the wood splits far more easily when it is frozen. Could I change the oil to a better mix for cold, like I do for my truck? I have used a borrowed splitter with no problem at all in temperatures down to zero.

Answer
Thanks for your inquiry.

The Log Splitters will function below 41 degrees; however the functionality is decreased when operated in temperatures below 41 degrees.

It is recommended that in temperatures below 41 degrees that the splitter is allowed to warm before operation.
In temperature conditions below 10 degrees it is recommended that the splitter is used indoors. (Electric only)

If it must be used outdoors, than you will want to warm it overnight indoors first, or use an engine block heater to warm the oil chamber prior to use.

It is not recommended to use a different oil that what is recommended by the manufacture, but if you have to use it in the cold weather. The best option is to put a magnetic block heater on the splitter when it is in storage so the oil is heated and will thin when you start using the splitter. If it is really cold where you are using the splitter, just leave the magnetic heater on the splitter while using it.
The reason is that below 41 degrees the hydraulic oil is too thick. Yes, you can change it out to thinner oil, but you risk it overheating in the summer months.

Thanks and have a great day!
